about

Jerry David DeCicca released his third solo album, Burning Daylight, in September 2018. It was an homage to late 70’s rock-n-roll singer-songwriters filtered through DeCicca’s own sensibilities. The songs blur the personal and the political, sweeping between major and minor chords, set in and around his home in South Central Texas.
The album was cut live to tape in 5 days at Sonic Ranch studios. On the 6th day, the drummer, Gary Mallaber (Moondance, Lucky Town, Steve Miller Band) caught a plane back to Los Angeles. The studio was booked for one additional day. After a morning of overdubs- backing vocals, a little acoustic guitar- the remaining 5 musicians stood in a circle, sipped Modelo, and played the entire record with acoustic guitars, muted bass, piano, and the occasional foot-tambourine, from start to finish, in the same room with 3 microphones hanging overhead. No telecasters, no crashing drums, no Wurlitzers. Here, the songs are slower, dustier, and dig deeper into the roots of their origins. It was the most solemn and quiet party you’ve ever heard.

Burning Daylight (Acoustic After-party version) is a stark, bare-bones reading of songs that Aquarium Drunkard called “offering beautiful ways to reject so much of our present moment’s ugliness” and The Fader celebrated as “a super-fun record from one of the more delightful, underrated figures on the DIY side of Americana.” This interpretation is a low-key celebration, that sounds nothing like it’s rock-n-roll companion. It’s loose, creaky, and more intimate with the same sense of beauty flipped to monochrome.
